Sony Unveils My Next Major Purchase
Sony revealed their plans for the PlayStation 4 today during a two hour long press conference. This would make the PS4 the first new PlayStation in seven years. The console was promoted by Sony as being like a "supercharged PC" with an eight-core processor able to juggle even more complex tasks simultaneously, enhanced graphics, the ability to play games as they are being downloaded, and a brand new controller designed in tandem with a stereo system camera that can sense the depth of the environment in front of it.
The PS4 is going to make gaming a lot more social. Players will be able to broadcast their game play in real time, and their friends can peek into their game and hop in to help.
“The architecture is like a PC in many ways, but supercharged to bring out its full potential as a gaming platform,” said Mark Cerny, Sony’s lead system architect.
Of course, we never saw the console during the two hour presentation, though we did see the controller.
Also, no release date was given and no price was given. If Sony is smart, they will mark it in the $199 range. Consumers are just not buying $500 consoles with $60 games like they were in 2008 (when console gaming peaked). More and more people are turning to cheap and often free games that they can play on their smart phone or tablet. Plus, a $199 price would fit in my budget better.
If you are interested in watching the full two hour presentation, here it is in all it's youtube glory:
